Story shared: My Uncle

When as a child I have memories of an uncle who was always kind and patient with me in anything that was going on around me. At times he would take my brother and myself along with some of my cousins or friends to Riddlesburg to swim in the river. There were a couple times that he allowed me to go into the print shop in Saxon and "help???" set some of the lead type used in news print where my Uncle Chuck also worked. I also enjoyed going to Saxon because there was an old train engine turn around station.

As an adult, I always enjoyed many conversations with him. In later years, I was especially drawn to him because he was the last of my mother's siblings of which there were a total of seven: Kenneth, Gordon, Nelson, Chuck, Gordon, Gwen and my mother Mildred. They are now all together in heaven. I now ask our Lord to watch over my cousins, Jackie and Valerie, and their families and my Aunt Mary Jane during the coming times. Let us all remember the good times of an uncle, a brother, a husband and a father.

Dad you were always there for us no matter what. You have taught me so many things. Through you I learned how to build things and refinish furniture. Whenever I had a question you were always there to guide me and give me your advise. You were always willing to lend a hand whether it was helping Fred put a roof on our gazebo or helping lay tile & wallpaper at Jackie's. When Jackie & I were young I remember you teaching us the right way to clean. One memory was you would inspect to make sure we did the job correct such as dusting the window sills. At the time we might have though it was silly but what you were really teaching us was not only to do a good job but to have pride in whatever we did. I thank you for all the life lessons whether big or small. Your love for all of us showed what it means to be a family. You will forever be in our hearts, minds and memories.

My Dad always taught my sister and I the value of family. When we were growing up, we would travel from Washington, DC to visit my grandmother and my Dad's brothers and sisters as well as my Dad's aunts and my Mom's family as well. This instilled a value of family for my sister and I and how important family was to him and to keeping in touch.

My Dad and Mom always spent the holidays with either my sister, who lives in Texas, and her family or with me and my family. After they moved to Florida, they still made the trip to spend special times with us.

We know how much he loved my Mom, sister and I, his grandsons and great grandchildren, as well as all his family. We will miss him so much, but will hold him in our hearts.

It was a blessing that you were able to spend time with your Dad, be assured that it was a comfort to him to have you near in those final days and the time will provide support for your closure.
